Industrial Hygiene is a mix of art and science. The art is having a sense for when something in the workplace could lead to impairment, injury or illness. The science comes bundled in instruments that never stop evolving to detect and warn of the potential for hazard, exposures or risk. The course is designed to meet the needs of students in the Industrial Hygiene Program as required by ABET. During this course, students will also be exposed to field sampling and become familiar with laboratory instruments used for chemical, biological and physical agents sampling analysis. The course covers the theoretical development. Analytical chemistry studies and uses instruments and methods used to separate, identify, and quantify matter. In practice, separation, identification or quantification may constitute the entire analysis or be combined with another method. Separation isolates analytes. Qualitative analysis identifies analytes, while quantitative analysis.

Randomly distributed errors occurring in industrial hygiene sampling are normal and are commonly included in analytical reports as the coefficient of variation (CV). The CV is a useful index for differentiating the true mean of known data points and laboratory reported Size: KB.

Industrial hygiene is the science of anticipating, recognizing, evaluating, and controlling workplace conditions that may cause workers' injury or illness. Industrial hygienists use environmental monitoring and analytical methods to detect the extent of worker exposure and employ engineering, work practice controls, and other methods to control potential history of the development of industrial hygiene sampling instruments and techniques.

Most industrial hygiene sampling for particulates is done using a filter that is 37mm in diameter. One exception is asbestos, which uses a 25mm diameter filter.

The two most commonly used filters are made of polyvinyl chloride with a 5-micron pore size and mixed cellulose ester with a micron pore size.
